This morning at Lotus Soul Gym I had the honour to teach the Peaceful Warriors! These Yogi's have taken a vow to practice yoga ever morning for 30 days. Lotus does this once a year (hopefully more often in the future) - it's the Peaceful Warrior Challenge. The rules are - if they come to every class over the 30 days they get a free month's pass to practice at any of the three locations. They are allowed to miss a maximum of two days, but they have to make up the class before the challenge is done to qualify for the free month of yoga.
This was the third class I have taught and WOW! What a group! It is such a powerful room of 33 committed yogis! I can feel the Shakti growing in the space. This morning I taught them the Anusara Invocation. We talked about Mantra and the Sanskrit language first so they could appreciate the energy that flows through them while singing this beautiful Mantra.
The Sanskrit language is quite an intelligent language. There are 50 sounds that all Sanskrit words come from. If you were to look at a drawing depiction of the chakras - you would see that if you counted all the lotus petals on each of the Chakras there are 50 petals. Some say that each of these petals represent a Sanskrit sound. When you speak Sanskrit words, the vibration of the words helps to balance and align you energetically. You not only say and hear the words, you feel them vibrationally.
When we sing Mantra - the combination of sounds act as some what of a sonar - to bring you into alignment energetically with the deeper meaning of the Mantra. There is energy bound to the series of sounds in the Mantra. They can become quite powerful. Mantra is also a great tool to develop concentration (or dharana for us yoga nerds). In class this morning - we discussed the meaning of the Innvocation. Mantra meaning will deepen over time as one works with Mantras. Manta acts as a linkage from lower consciousness to higher consciousness (or Divine Consciousness). It is always a great idea to sit in stillness and enjoy the silence that follows. Feel your body and the space around you upon completion of the Mantra.
Mantra's are sacred in that they are to be passed down from teacher to student. In my experience - it's not about searching on the internet for something to chant or sing. Every Mantra that I use has been taught to me by one of my teachers.
The Anusara Invocation:
Om
Namah Shivaya Gurave
I honour the essence of Being, the Auspicious One, the luminous Teacher within and without,
Satchidananda Murtaye
Who assumes the forms of Truth, Consciousness, and Bliss,
Nishprapanchaya Shantaya
Is never absent, full of peace
Niralambaya Tesjase
Ultimately free and sparkles with a Divine luster.
Om
I've searched out a couple You Tube Videos for you.
Here's a version for my Ooommmmie's! You have to watch it for a bit to hear the Invocation. It's too fun!
Namaste!! Keep on Rockin' Peacefuls!
